As a member of Garnet and Black Magazine’s Design Team, I create online graphics as well as print layouts for poems and articles. I enjoy working in illustrative styles for the magazine, as I feel it is a really engaging way to give a snippet of the story of the article in a visual medium.
Each semester, we publish a print edition of the magazine. This is an incredibly key time for our team, as we are responsible for designing and formatting the appearance of the spreads. When articles that I have designed the online graphic for are selected for the print edition, I love the challenge of translating those online graphics into print spread designs.
The articles are always fantastic opportunities to explore some really interesting typographic layouts, and practice using type as a method for aesthetics rather than just language.
At left are a selection of online graphics I have created for the magazine. Below are 3 sets of online graphics, as well as the print layouts I designed based upon those online illustrations.
One set of print articles I especially enjoyed was the two connected articles below: "The Gift of Growing Older" and "Looking at Looking Good for Your Age." The former was a photoshoot, so I was able to work with arranging images through the spread in an engaging way. Because the latter was a more traditional article with no accompanying photos, I was able to create illustrations as well as interesting typographic effects for the visuals.
